We want to provide a supportive community and a safe place of learning for those who desire to make the transition into living a more minimalistic and sustainable life, with every necessity at their fingertips. In order to create such an authentic way of life in which we can incorporate these Core Culture Values, GreenLand provides for residents the four necessary Pillars of Life: Food, Water, Shelter, and Energy.
GreenLand's 4 Pillars
GreenLand will implement state-of-the-art systems for providing food, water, shelter, and energy in an organic and renewable fashion. These will also power the land, so we can be free from the major utility grids. But living off the grid at GreenLand doesn't mean you surrender all modern-day technology. For instance, private wifi will be available to all residents and visitors. To live at GreenLand is to live authentically and in harmony with our natural environment AND the technology of our present era.
Renewable energy will be the main source of energy for the community. Each individual structure will have its own solar-paneled roof. Tall wind turbines will provide energy during the day and store energy by battery at night. Another renewable source will be generators run by the community which we will convert waste through a pyrolysis method. Each individual unit and building will contain a small cast iron stove for back up heating. The larger structures we use for gathering, such as the community building will be heated and cooled by a geothermal system. The smaller, private units will have an efficient mini-split system for heating and cooling. Each building will be strategically placed in order to take advantage of passive solar energy and daylight.
A cumulative approach will be used to ensure enough water is available for all needs of the community. Cisterns and small reservoirs (ponds) will capture rain runoff on the property and store in wells. Water manufacturing through solar/hydro panels, dehumidification and other methods will be utilized to capture the water and provide for some of our needs. Water conservation and the use of greywater irrigation will be essential aspects of the water program. Wastewater from showers and sinks will be filtered to greywater and will make use of natural grasses and plant bed areas. This water will be collected in cisterns where it will be stored for irrigation. Composting toilets will also be standard in all the community and private bathrooms.
Interior and exterior farming will provide our main source of food—organic vegetables and fruit. Each pilot community will have no more than 12 members and should require about 3-5 acres of farm(depending on climate). In addition, a 1000 sq.ft. greenhouse will enable continued harvesting for the winter months. GreenLand is considerate of the future generations and therefore uses organic and permaculture farming and aquaponics to preserve the land. Forest gardens (fruit and nut trees) will be cultivated. All members will participate in the implementation and the maintenance of these gardens.
Shelter will consist of free-standing Tiny Homes and Tiny Homes suites. The free-standing Tiny Homes are units of 400-600 sq.feet with a basement.
The Tiny Home suites are private living units attached to a main communal space, such as the agriculture center, the large kitchen and dining hall, the art center, or the community den/business center, etc.
Container homes (where allowed) will be super-insulated to create a comfortable inside living space, and the exterior of the home will be sealed with rustproof no-VOC paint. These will be set on a foundation with optional basements.
In colder climates (where required) each home will be heated and cooled with geothermal technology, and several homes will share a well.
Interiors will be built from recycled or reclaimed material including drywall, solid wood paneling, flooring, etc.… All plumbing fixtures will be high-efficiency and water-saving; appliances will be high-efficiency and all electric.
